Time Travel cover, 1954 to 1953

Here is an odd PanAm cover from Japan, claiming that due to the International Date Line, the mail could be sent in 1954 and received in 1953 in Hawaii.  


The postmarks back up the claim - it was mailed on 1-1-54 and got to Hawaii on 12-31-1953.  

 



There is a faint but interesting cachet explaining how it works.  The mail went on to Fall River MA.

Jan 25 Yard Sale at the Library

We were invited to a "yard sale" event at the San Diego Philatelic Library, and it was nice to see so much material on sale and so many of the regular collectors we've known for decades. Boy, they had some deeply discounted lots, including this batch of four to ten ounce off paper mixtures by country for only $1 or $2 a bag.  That's a surefire way to get things sold and to clear out a file cabinet of old stock.  At $10 a bag I would have skipped these, but there's no way to fail at $1-$2 a bag. There were a lot of folder lots, including one from Cambodia that said $325 CV for $20.  A first look saw just a lot of CTO topical sets, which actually list for LESS THAN the minimum catalog price of 25c each (a set of 7 for $1.50 for example).  But wait, the last 20 pages or so were all mint and most of the sets had the matching souvenir sheets.  Mint, the price is x2 or x3 or even x4 the CTO prices.  So yes, $20 is perfect.  We have already pulled most of the...

An Industrial Nightmare from Saar

From the 1920s to 1950s, there were a lot of stamps showing factories with huge plumes of pollution.  This was most pronounced from Eastern Europe and Russia after WWII, where the workers were stylized and turned into icons, and industry was rampant. Here is a stamp from Saar (Scott #98) which is depressing every time I see it. The catalog says this is the Burbach Steelworks in Dillingen, Germany.  This stamp is high on my mental list of the ugliest stamps ever printed.  It's dark, low contrast, and badly over-inked.  The design is so bad, in fact, that you can't even read the printed value of 25c at the bottom, and it was almost immediately surcharged "5 FRANKEN". Germany Definitives: Historic Sites 1987-2004

The Historic Sites Series is a long-running set of definitives from Germany, starting in 1987 and running through 2004.  Although the designs are mostly buildings, some statues are included.  The first series (Scott catalog #1515A-1540A) has 27 stamps from 5pf to 400pf values, all regular sheet stamps.  These are mostly of minimal values, but only the 280pf lists for over $2.  Keep an eye on the issues which include "Berlin" in the name.  Next there are 7 self-adhesives in the 1990s which are all $2 or more, and 23 more sheet stamps (#1838-1860) where the ones from 300pf to 720pf (the highest value in the whole series) are in the $2 to $6 range.  Nine of these are denominated in both pfennigs and euros.  This is followed by the last set of 18 from 2002-04 (#2199-2216) denominated in euros only, with die-cut self-adhesive coil and booklet stamps.  Here, the values over 1-euro are worth about $1.50 per euro.
