Penny Reds - Corner Letters

Continuing with the stockbook from last time, the next few pages said "Corner  Letters 240".

So, this was another completed sequence, this time capturing all combinations of the letters in the corners, from AA to LT.  A few times in my life, when seeing a stack of these classic stamps, I briefly thought it would be fun to try and collect all those corner letters, but every time my brain said that's crazy, why would I do that to myself?

Thousands of stamps had to be picked through to find all those different letter combinations.  I listed this collection also, and for 240 stamps that catalog $3 each, it was hard to figure a good starting price.  I went with $289, but I can always lower it later if there is no interest in the first few weeks.  There is no such thing as an exact price.  Maybe hundreds of collectors will click on it and grumble that I charged too much -- they clearly did not stop and think what was involved in putting this together.   Oh well ...  one day someone will just see it and have to have it.  Think of all the time saved by the previous collector doing all that work.

Again, I had to get them out of the heavy stockbook and onto individual pages that could be mailed easily.  Here are the first two: 

My younger self would have jumped on a batch like this.  It is so unusual, and over the top in terms of the work involved.  But my younger self never had the budget for something like this.  I was lucky if I could spend $10 at a time.

Angola classic animals

Here's a set that always brings back memories for me: Angola #362-381.  Here is a mint set that I am listing for the Philatelic Library soon.  The first few stamps in this set were some of the most iconic and common animal topicals when I was growing up.  Almost every starter packet of animals had these included.  100 different animals?  You will probably find the 5c leopard or stately 10c antelope, or the 20c elephant ... or all three of them.  Almost every starter collection I have seen since then that had only a handful of stamps from Angola would have a few of these. The graphics were really special for their time period: crisp and colorful and reasonably accurate portrayals of each animal.  Back then, every color plate had to be minutely aligned, and I don't recall having ever seen any color ink shifted or missing. An Industrial Nightmare from Saar

From the 1920s to 1950s, there were a lot of stamps showing factories with huge plumes of pollution.  This was most pronounced from Eastern Europe and Russia after WWII, where the workers were stylized and turned into icons, and industry was rampant. Here is a stamp from Saar (Scott #98) which is depressing every time I see it. The catalog says this is the Burbach Steelworks in Dillingen, Germany.  This stamp is high on my mental list of the ugliest stamps ever printed.  It's dark, low contrast, and badly over-inked.  The design is so bad, in fact, that you can't even read the printed value of 25c at the bottom, and it was almost immediately surcharged "5 FRANKEN". Circuit Books

One of the many ways that philatelists acquire new items is through "circuits" from local clubs or big organizations.  In these, you would receive an envelope with some circuit books in them.  You can take what you want, write your member number in the box where the stamp was, then mark the total value taken, and mail the books to the next address listed on the circuit.  After a while, the circuit books would be retired and sent back to the member who created them with payment for the items sold. I vaguely recall trying some of these from the American Philatelic Society back in the 90s.  The ones I made came back about a year later almost untouched, but I did enjoyed picking through the ones I received along the way.  It doesn't feel like a good way to get rid of cheaper stamps, due to time and costs.
